Rev. Bengston (aka Bengtson) was the pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Lockport. A veteran of WWI, Rev Bengston took over the Lockport congregation in 1933 as his first pastorate. Previous to this he had charge of the Lutheran exhibit in the Hall of Religion at the Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago.
During WWII he started a newsletter called “Contact” which kept Lockport residents informed of the locations of Lockport’s soldiers.
After WWII he continued the newsletter and it ran well into the 1960’s. By this time soldiers also received birthday cards and at Christmas a care package was also sent to all soldiers who hailed from Lockport, IL. This was all done by volunteers.
He was active in the American Legion John Olson Post and was a former commander and part of the Will County council. He served as chaplain for those groups as well.
Rev. Bengston (Bengtson) passed away in 1966. He is buried in the Bengtson family plot at Fridhem Lutheran Cemetery, Hordville, NE
